Studio 33 is a multidisciplinary creative compound in a historic Art Deco building on Long Beach’s Broadway Corridor — a place where art meets play.

Under one roof, Studio 33 brings together a gallery and gathering space, a workshop and fabrication studio, and design offices and creative agency — connecting artists, makers, and designers working across painting, illustration, sculpture, ceramics, jewelry, writing, music, dance, design, and beyond.

Home to PIP Fabrication and SELA Art Center’s Live Drawing Series, Studio 33 is a place to make, gather, collaborate, and bring ideas to life.

Ch. 4 // The Queen Mary

The arrival of the Queen Mary in Long Beach on December 9, 1967, marked the beginning of a new chapter for the city. Once the world’s most celebrated ocean liner, she crossed the Atlantic for the final time before finding a permanent home in Long Beach Harbor—transforming from a symbol of international luxury travel into one of Southern California’s most iconic landmarks.

But the Queen Mary’s story is also part of a much larger Long Beach story. Long before the ship arrived, downtown Long Beach was a thriving destination for shopping, entertainment, and style. Along bustling Pine Avenue, businesses like Frank A. Hill & Son Furriers served a growing community shaped by the city’s booming oil industry, expanding port, and elegant social scene.

Luxury retailers, department stores, and specialty shops helped define Long Beach as a place where people came not just to work, but to experience the very best the city had to offer.

The Queen Mary carried that spirit forward. Today, she stands as a reminder of Long Beach’s rich history—where commerce, craftsmanship, tourism, and culture have long come together to shape the city’s identity.

From the storefronts of Pine Avenue to the decks of the Queen Mary, Long Beach has always welcomed big ideas, remarkable stories, and people from around the world.

Go Behind The Scenes W/ Our Team at Studio 33

When we officially took over this incredible 1930s building in October 2025, we had a vision: to create a space where creativity thrives and everyone who walks through the doors feels at home.

At its core, Studio 33 is a creative compound where art meets play. Equal parts gallery, community hub, fabrication studio, and design offices, it’s a place where creativity takes shape in many forms, all under one roof.

Additionally, it is now home to our sister fabrication studio and idea lab: PIP (Pretty In Plastic).

We knew the journey would be an adventure, but we never could have imagined the amount of support, kindness, and encouragement we’d receive from the East Broadway community.

Every day, new faces stop by to say hello, ask questions, and share their excitement about what Studio 33 will bring to the neighborhood. That original vision is still at the heart of everything we do, and we’re taking the time to build it thoughtfully and intentionally.

The best part? We’ve already found an incredible community of friends, neighbors, and even complete strangers who are just as excited about fostering a creative hub here in Long Beach.

While there’s still plenty of work ahead, we’re embracing every step of the process and feel incredibly grateful to be part of such a welcoming community of local business owners.

Chapter 3 // Long Beach’s “Fur Vest Week”

Before our building became Studio 33, it was home to one of Long Beach’s most prominent businesses: Frank A. Hill & Son Furriers.

During World War II, Frank A. Hill wasn’t just a successful businessman—he became a civic leader. Appointed by the Southern California Fur Industry Committee and working alongside Mayor Clarence E. Wagner, Hill served as Long Beach chairman of Fur Vest Week, a citywide effort supporting America’s Merchant Marine.

Under the campaign’s powerful slogan, “They keep our lifelines open—you keep them warm,” residents were encouraged to donate old or worn-out fur garments. No matter their condition, the donated furs were cleaned, mothproofed, and transformed by volunteer furriers into insulated, fur-lined vests for merchant seamen facing freezing conditions aboard Allied supply ships.

These weren’t luxury garments—they were lifesaving equipment. Distributed free of charge, the vests became standard emergency gear aboard American merchant vessels, helping protect crews from brutal ocean winds and, in some cases, increasing their chances of survival if forced into lifeboats after enemy attacks.

Historical photographs from the campaign even show Mayor Wagner wearing one of the finished vests as Frank A. Hill explains how donated furs from Long Beach would be given new purpose in support of the war effort.

It’s a remarkable reminder that the building we now know as Studio 33 has long been connected to creativity, craftsmanship, and community service. Decades before it became a space for artists and makers, it was home to a business that helped mobilize Long Beach for a cause far greater than itself.

Chapter 2 // Long Beach Retail History

Long before luxury shopping moved to suburban malls, Long Beach was one of Southern California’s premier retail destinations. 🌴

During the 1930s, 40s, and 50s, Pine Avenue rivaled some of the most important shopping districts in the West. Stores like Buffums, Walker’s, Sears, and Montgomery Ward drew shoppers from across the region, while the city’s booming oil and port industries created a growing class of affluent residents eager to spend on luxury goods.

Fur coats were among the ultimate status symbols of the era. Mink, fox, Persian lamb, and custom fur garments were marketed as investments and often stored in specialized fur vaults during the summer months.

For furrier Frank H. Hill, Long Beach was the perfect place to build a business. His clientele likely included oil executives, business owners, developers, professionals, and retirees who helped fuel the city’s prosperity.

By the 1950s, shopping wasn’t limited to downtown. Upscale neighborhood business districts emerged closer to where Long Beach’s wealthiest residents lived. Frank H. Hill & Son Furs established itself on East Broadway near Redondo Avenue, serving the affluent communities of Belmont Heights, Bluff Heights, Belmont Shore, Naples, and Alamitos Heights.

Frank Hill’s location tells an important story. He wasn’t tucked away in an industrial district or operating as a small repair shop—he was positioned in the heart of one of Long Beach’s most desirable shopping corridors, where luxury fashion met a growing and prosperous community.

This stretch of Broadway was once part of a thriving retail landscape that helped make Long Beach one of Southern California’s great shopping cities.

Today, E Broadway is a paradise of coffee shops, eateries, iconic bars and residences. Just a few blocks away from the beach, it continues to thrive as an inclusive and friendly neighborhood that fosters community. We’re honored to be a small part of it’s history ✨

Chapter 1 // Intro:

Long before Studio 33 filled its halls with art and community gatherings, 3316 E. Broadway was home to Frank A. Hill & Son Furriers—one of Long Beach’s most successful and influential early businesses.

Frank A. Hill entered the fur trade at just 14 years old and built a thriving manufacturing and retail operation that served customers from across Southern California and beyond. By 1941, Hill described it as the biggest year his company had experienced since opening in 1926. His business had grown so much that he expanded into larger quarters on East Broadway and opened a downtown showroom in the historic Jergins Arcade.

But Hill’s impact extended beyond business. During World War II, he served as Long Beach chairman of “Fur Vest Week,” a nationwide campaign that collected unwanted fur coats and transformed them into insulated vests for America’s merchant seamen. The vests were distributed free of charge to sailors facing harsh ocean conditions and the dangers of wartime service.

In one newspaper interview, Hill noted that Long Beach was experiencing an economic surge, estimating that roughly $250,000 more was entering circulation every day than the year before—equivalent to nearly $6 million per day today. The city’s rapid growth was reflected in the success of businesses like his.

Today, the building that once housed Hill’s fur manufacturing headquarters has taken on a new life as a creative space dedicated to bringing people together through art, culture, and community. Its walls have witnessed nearly a century of Long Beach history—from wartime industry and entrepreneurship to the vibrant creative energy that fills the space today.
