In September of 2015, after a unanimous vote by the LA City Council, Los Angeles launched its bid to host the 2024 Olympic and Paralympic Games. If the bid is accepted, this will be the first time in 28 years that the Summer Games will be hosted by the United States.
The LA2024 Olympic committee chose the sun as a symbol to represent the City of Angels stating, “The sun is the perfect symbol for Los Angeles, and there is no stronger metaphor for what this city is all about: reinvention. The rising and setting sun is our inspiration, offering the promise of a tomorrow that can be whatever we want it to be. In this spirit, LA 2024 will reimagine the Olympic and Paralympic Games as the first energy-positive, solar-powered Games ever.”
To mark this bid as a historic event, Pretty in Plastic teamed up with 72andSunny to create a statuette of the chosen emblem for the Olympic bid, a flying angel with sunbeams radiating from her heart. Made from plexiglass and painted in gradient sun beams, the angel soars above a polished granite base.
Here is a glimpse into the process of creating this beaming symbol of Olympic spirit in the City of Angels:
